The Committee on Type Culture Collection of Chinese Academy of Sciences was organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences in April. 1996. The Committee includes 9 members of Culture Collections, these are: China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center(CGMCC), China Center for General Viruses Culture Collection(CCGVCC) Cell Bank, Kunming Cell Bank, Gene Bank, In vitro Plant Germplasm Collection(IVPGC), the Rare, Endangered and Endemic Plant Germplasm Collection(REEP), Marine Biological Germplasm Collection and the Freshwater Algae Culture Collection(FACHB). Besides, the Committee also builds up an Information Network Center responsible for establishing database and sharing information among the Culture Collections members and the public.

 

All the Culture Colture in the Committer belong to respective institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Most of them have a history more than decades and they are known as one of the best culture collections in each field in China. Up to now, about 16000 strains have been collected, including 13000 microbial strains, 280 cell lines, 460 genes materials, over 300 cell lines and 400 tissues from rare, endangered and endemic animals, 760 strains of viruses, 298 in vitro plant germplasms, over 600 strains of freshwater algae and 100 strains of marine algae, over 370 rare, endangered and endemic plants germplasms. As one of the main centers, the Culture Collections of the Committee have provided over hundred thousand strains to public each year and played a key role in preservation, research and Protection of biodiversity in China.    

 

The main purpose of the Committee is to guide the research activities and to promote the research and preservation levels of each member unit. In the meantime, the Committee opens channels for the members exchanging with other institutions domestically and internationally. Since the foundation of the Committee, great efforts have been made in raising funds from different sources in order to offer the Culture Collections in better operation and sustainable development.
